JOYFULLY SERVING CHRIST Know It All A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales, and she told her teacher that Jonah had been swallowed by a whale. The teacher immediately said, “Suzzie, it is physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it is a very large mammal its throat is very small.” Suzzie said, “Well, Jonah was swallowed by a whale.” Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah. The teacher asked, What if Jonah went to hell? Suzzie said, Then you ask him. Nearly all of us enjoy it when a “know-it-all” gets shown up because we all have suffered at the hands of just such a person at one time or another. This person knows everything about everything. They are never without an opinion no matter what the subject, and they make sure you know that their opinion alone is the right one. I would like to think that I’ve never acted or spoken as a “know-it-all,” yet I know that that is not the case since I, too, (like the teacher) have had some rather embarrassing “red-faced moments.” In Romans, the twelfth chapter, in verses three and four, Paul, the apostle, says, “I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think (that is, no one should esteem himself too much, or be vain and arrogant). Instead, think sensibly (be of the right mind, sane-minded, exercising self control–Strong’s and Thayer’s), as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.” Rom 12:3-4 HCSB Jesus throughout his earthly life showed the world how a person is to live, and He gave us instructions about how we should live. If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. (Mark 9:35 HCSB) Therefore, if I want to be great I must not be vain or arrogant, rather I must put others first and myself last and become the servant of everyone. Greatness, then, for you and for me, is not found in vainglory, but in service to all. Go Joyfully Serve Christ Today, [Today, if you will be totally honest with yourself and the Lord, you can have true life by praying this simple prayer: “Lord, I know I am a sinner. I know that Jesus died because of my sins. Right now I confess my sins to You, and ask you to come into my life. Forgive me and cleanse me. Accept me into your family. I give myself to You, and ask that you birth me into Your Kingdom, and that You fill me with Your Holy Spirit.”] Freely Share This Post--Bobby T. Hood
