JOyKE of the DAY: True Background for the Joke. On one of my Missionary trips around 2005 I was in North Ossetia. The U. S. S. R. had dissolved in 1991, but this country was still under Russian control. I was near Beslan where, as you may remember, a school had been invaded by Islamic Chechen terrorist (same country as our recent Boston Marathon bombers) and around 380 people killed. I was going to visit the school and graveyard of the murdered students when I was arrested by a Muslim policeman and taken in for questioning. My main crime was being an American and I think this policeman was looking for a Christian Criminal that he could exploit and take some of the heat off of Muslims. They brought in a KGB trained interrogator to question me. He was the only policeman who spoke English and so he had to play “Good Cop” / “Bad Cop” all by himself. He would talk nice to me and suddenly start screaming. Then he would tell me a joke and then yell accusations and threats at me. This is one of the jokes he told me. The Russian son came to his Papa for a serious discussion. The son said, “Father, you have always told me that the U. S. S. R. would one day rule the world and that if I wanted a place at the table I needed to study the Russian language. Well, the U. S. S. R. has dissolved, Russia is in bankruptcy, and it looks like we have backed the wrong horse. What language should I study now in order to be part of those who will one day rule the world?” The Father wisely said, “Well, my son, we can’t be absolutely sure at this point. What language you should study depends on your personality. If you are an optimist, study English. If you are a pessimist, study Arabic. And if you are a realist, study Chinese.
