JSE finishes month almost 6% lower ◾Japan – The Nikkei Index dropped 0.2% after trading as low as 13,624.90 and as high as 13,746.72. The index jumped 3.5% to a three-week high of 13,677.32 on Friday. ◾Hong Kong – Hong Kong financial markets are closed today for a public holiday and will resume trading on Tuesday. ◾European markets - Reuters reported that European shares pared losses in choppy trade on Friday as mixed U.S. growth data had investors speculating that the U.S. Federal Reserve may be slower in withdrawing its monetary stimulus programme. ◾U.S. markets – According to the Reuters website, the dollar was broadly firm on Monday as traders greeted the start of a new quarter that could see the U.S. Federal Reserve beginning to wind down its stimulus, even as other major central banks are expected to maintain their super-easy monetary policy. ◾Local markets – The Business Day reports that the JSE closed higher on Friday, but finished the month almost 6% lower. The all share index lifted 1.27% to 39,578.10 on Friday with the top 40 index adding 1.14%. ◾Rand – The Rand was last trading at R9.9738 against the Dollar from Thursday’s close of R9.9371. The local currency weakened to R13.0346 against the Euro and to R15.1866 against the Pound. ◾Precious Metals – Gold edged higher to $1 242.85, with the platinum price quoted at $1 348, and palladium last trading at $675. ◾Oil Price – The Brent crude oil price was last trading higher at $101.99 a barrel news.psgonline.co.za/2013/07/jse-finishes-month-almost-6-lower/
