JU teachers’ movement against VC resignation get new sphere Students demand a stable situation Shoriful Kabir Shamim Jahangirnagar University: Jahangirnagar University teachers association (JUTA) got new circle including employees and staffs at JU on Wednesday demanded the resignation of vice-chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain for his alleged irregularities in the university since appointment. At an assembly orgnaised by JU Teachers Association in front of VC’s residence at about 12pm, at least university’s three organisaiton including JU officers Somitte, employees union and employees somitte has expressed solidarity with the teachers demand and vowed to resign VC Professor Anwar Hossain. Meanwhile, general students of the university under the banner of Socheton Chhatra held an assembly in front of the university’s administrative building demanding a stable situation in the campus as soon as possible. Students of different faculties demanded to end up the campus current unrest in returning teachers at the classes. They also want chancellor’s intervention regarding the campus stalemate where if there is any way for resolving the crisis to quit VC or come into a negotiation with the agitating teachers, they added. On the other hand, the teachers kept confined VC professor Anwar Hossan inside the compound of the Vc’s house for third consecutive days, since Sunday night, pressing for his resignation. JUTA’s general secretary Professor Sharif Uddin presided over the conference while platform’s president Ajit Kumar Masumdar, General Teachers Forum convener Professor Hanif Ali and member secretary Professor Kamrul Ahsan, president of Officers Somitte Abdur Rahman Babu and a huge number of teachers, employees and staffs were present, among others. Later, the combined platform made a human chain in front of the VC residence demanding VC’ resignation as soon as possible. Earlier, JUTA president Professor Ajit Kumar Majumdar announced the indefinite sit-in in front of the VC’s residence protesting a warning notice against him where the VC mentioned that JUTA president was patronising the movement. The VC, however, said that the teachers’ sit-in in front of anyone’s residence was a violation of fundamental right. ‘They also behaved rudely with me while I was silent as altercating with the teachers would push JU into an unending stalemate,’ he said. The VC also alleged that the teachers were practicing falsehood against him and expressed shock at the teachers’ behavior against VC. ‘I requested them to go from my residence peacefully but they behaved with me roughly’, he alleged. General Teachers Forum alleged that a proposal of holding a discussion has been sent to the VC but he refused it The General Teachers’ Forum member secretary, Professor Kamrul Ahsan, has said the agitation programme will continue until the VC resigns. Meanwhile, after ending the weeklong work abstention from October 24 to 31, the JUTA initiated the all-out strike for an indefinite period from November 2 as the VC did not resign within the deadline. They have continued boycotting classes and halting the university transport services except students’ transportation facilities. JUTA also declared non-cooperation movement against the VC and sought corporation from all concerned. They also expressed worry about the upcoming first year admission test under the VC and urged him to resign from his post and not to play with admission seekers’ fate. Meanwhile, a panic was prevailing on the campus as the VC was determined to hold the JUCSU polls on Dec 5 amid the ongoing volatile situation while the teachers vowed to resist the JUCSU polls. Since April 2013, the JU teachers have been on the movement demanding the VC’s resignation raising some 18 allegations including his rough behavior with the teachers and staffs, making offensive comments on media, anomalies in the admission process and misuse of the university’s fund.
