JUNE 24, 1944: BIRTHDAY -- Jeff Beck A guitarist so hot no band could contain him, Jeff Beck first gained notoriety joining the Yardbirds as Eric Claptons replacement and later with the band would tutor a newcomer to the band who had already some success as a London session guitarist, Jimmy Page. He went solo forming e Jeff Beck Group, one of e original super groups, which brought in Nicky Hopkins on piano, already well-known for his work with the Who, Kinks, and Rolling Stones, and elevated two up and coming rockers -- Ron Wood who despite his substantial guitar talent, played bass, and introduced Rod Stewart to a much larger audience. The band lasted for two albums before Wood and Stewart replaced Steve Marriott changing the Small Faces to the bawdy Rolling Stones knock off, the Faces. Jeff Beck formed another popular Jeff Beck Group who recorded two albums then joined forces with former Vanilla Fudge rhythm section, Tim Boggart and Carmine Appice for the album BECK, BOGART & APPICE. In 1975, Jeff Beck would take a turn that would become the main direction for the rest of his career, teaming up with Beatles producer, to record an all instrumental jazz album BLOW BY BLOW. His jazz reputation would be enhanced on subsequent works teaming up with popular jazz keyboards man, Jan Hammer. In the Mid 1980s, he was sought by Mick Jagger to single-handedly fill in for Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards as the primary guitarist on Jaggers first two solo albums, SHES THE BOSS and PRIMITIVE COOL. Beck remains active to this day with recent albums including LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTTs gaining much recognition.
