JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013 HITCHCOCK SCORCHES TO VICTORY WHILST POWELL-HILL & EDWARDS SHOW GREAT PROMISE Sam Hitchcock stormed to victory in the recent Junior Club Championships held over the weekend at Carmarthen Golf Club. 41 juniors took part in various competitions on the main course as well as the development course in extremely hot conditions over the two days. Sam Hitchcock’s play could only be described as incredible with scores of nett 61 & nett 59 to record a victory in emphatic style with a record total of 120, 22 under his handicap to take the Whites category of the H.Dewi Evans Cup. In second place with an excellent 135, and normally good enough to win in previous years was Scott Jones which included a 10 on the first hole of the 36 hole competition. This showed great tenacity by Scott to fight back having had such a disappointing start. In third place on 141 was Rhodri Cole after an excellent 67 in his second round with Junior Captain Ryan Skinner 4th, two shots back on 143. Sion Jenkins fell away after a very good 68 in the first round and should be encouraged by his consistent play whilst defending champion James Bryan put together a very good 65 for the second best nett on Sunday. Scott Jones however, took the much coveted Lindquist Cup for the best gross with a score of 159, beating his closest rival, Ryan Skinner by 4 shots on 163 with Sam Hitchcock a further 3 shots behind on 166. In the Red’s competition, Jason Powell- Hill’s brilliant first round 64 was equalled by both Osain McAvoy and Deian Rees with Rhys Jones a further two shots behind. Jason however, withstood the pressure and put together a magnificent 56 to ensure Deian Rees in superb 64 was only good enough for second place. 10 year old Megan Thomas shot an outstanding second round 59 nett, however this was not good enough as Chris Evans 60 nett for a 131 total was good enough to pip Megan by 2 shots. Sean Hazelby also put together a brilliant second round 65 to continue his great early season promise. A brilliant performance by all mentioned and some serious handicap reviews for the vast majority who obviously enjoyed the hot conditions. The Blue section was a keenly fought affair over the stableford format over 9 holes over the two days. Josh Edwards continued his tremendous potential with 45 points to beat Cieran Stephens by 2 shots. In third place was 7 year old Elis Price with 35 points followed by Owen Preece with 28 points. The Wizards competition over “Y Marchog Bach” was also a keenly fought event with Keely James victorious with and excellent 26 shots. Keely is quickly following in her brother Kieran and Grand-father Lynn’s footsteps, both of whom are great competitors. Keely pipped newcomer Rhys Jones with 27 shots including a birdie two and due to their impressive play have been promoted onto the Blue tee’s, a tremendous effort. In third place was Owain Rees with 30 shots, another very promising player following in his big brother Deian’s footsteps in what was a very successful family day for the Rees’s. The Morris Trophy which was incorporated for those off the White and Red tees on Sunday’s competition was won by Jason Powell-Hill with 56, followed by Megan Thomas and Sam Hitchcock with 59’s.
