JUNIOR CRICKET Kenilworth Under 14s lost to Leamington last Thursday by 48 runs but beat Wardens on Sunday morning at home after restricting Wardens to 71 for 7 in their 20 overs, then reaching 73 for 3 with 3 balls to spare, Henry Curran scoring 38 not out and captain Jonathan Sparks 17 not out. Also on Sunday, Kenilworth Under 13s beat Warwick away, scoring 112 for 3, Oscar Dalrymple 31 not out and captain Jack Bould 26, before keeping Warwick down to 58 all out, with 4 wickets for Max Dumper and 2 for Joshua East. U11 Kenilworths U11s were put into bat first against Wellesbourne on Sunday. The morning looked like it would be a long one when Wellesbournes opening bowler bowled Kenilworths Cameron Holden first ball but he and his partner Theo Mannion recovered from that set back to make a stand of 13 in their opening four overs with Cameron scoring 15 runs off the bat. Kenilworths next three batting pairs all made positive contributions with Alfie Porter and Fred Barry both scoring 13 runs and James McKenzie top scorer with 19 runs. Kenilworth ended their innings on 258-8. Having watched Wellesbournes very accurate bowling Kenilworth took to the field hoping to emulate them. Kenilworths keeper James Sparks made light work of his task behind the stumps with Kenilworths bowlers bowling straighter than on previous Sundays. Two wickets fell in each of Harvey Browns, Theo Mannion, Harry Dumpers and Fred Barrys overs helping Kenilworth over the winning line as Wellesbourne closed their innings on 210-9. U10s Kenilworths U10s had a far tighter match against Hunningham U10s on Friday evening. Kenilworths rather wayward bowling performance tested the athletical keeping abilities of Kenilworths Noah Smithson and enabled Hunningham to score 257 runs without losing a wicket. Kenilworths openers Will Machin and David Knott saw off the Hunningham opening bowlers with a stand of 9 runs. Second pair Ben Harrison and Simon Reading and third pair Josh Beeson and Ciaran Smith pressed home the advantage with stands of 26 and 23 respectively, protecting their wickets well and picking up the extras. After 12 overs Kenilworth were one run in the lead on 258-0. That left Kenilworths fourth pair captain James Sparks and Noah Smithson to see out the last four overs. A mix up in their first over led to a run out and a five run loss which was swiftly followed by a second wicket falling as a spinning ball beat the bat and hit the off stump. The batsmen then selected the balls to hit wisely and managed to recover sufficiently to make the scores level with one over to go. Noah then calmly scored a single and Jamie three off the next two balls leaving Kenilworth four in the lead and Noah on strike with the responsibility to defend the last balls of the over. Noah stuck to his defensive task well and safely defended the remaining balls, all of which were on middle stump meaning Kenilworth closed on 261-2.
