JUNIOR LEADERSHIP and the JUNIOR LEADERSHIP GRADUATION DINNER Junior Leadership Kershaw County is an education partnership of the Kershaw County School District, Camden Military Academy, and the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. The goals are to offer students training in leadership skills and to help build a countywide spirit by bringing together students from Kershaw County schools. On Thursday April 24th, Junior Leadership Kershaw County held its annual Graduation Dinner at the Historic Robert Mills Courthouse on Broad Street in Camden, SC. They following schools were represented: Camden High School, Lugoff-Elgin High School, North Central High School, and Camden Military Academy. The cadets who represented us (CMA) proudly were Chris Chamberlain, Nathan Luck, and Noah Williams. Lt. Col. Pat Armstrong, LCDR Doug Marsden, and Mr. Brent Kendall accompanied Chamberlain, Lusk, and Williams to the event. The evening started with Mrs. Laurie Parks, Chair, Junior Leadership Steering Committee, welcoming everyone to the Graduation Dinner. Chaplain Shirley Halley gave the invocation before the delicious meal. Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburke (South Carolina House of Representatives) introduced the keynote speaker, Sen. Thomas McElveen. Senator McElveen challenged the graduates of this year’s Junior Leadership Kershaw County program not to forget to “look around” in the midst of their busy lives for chances to contribute to the world around them. He shared his favorite quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” “What can you do to make someone else’s life better? What are you doing to make the world around you a better place? You’ve already proven that you’re motivated and that you have what it takes to be successful.” McElveen said. He concluded by quoting Sir Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Following McElveen’s remarks, students, their parents, and others present watched a video highlighting the year’s activities. Some of the activities included: Opening Session & Leadership Retreat Weekend where students participated in team building activities, Job Market Strategies, Youth Court and conflict resolution, Social and Formal Dining Etiquette, Cultural Diversity and Social Norms, State Government (Rep Laurie Slade Funderburke, Rep Jay Lucas, and Sen. Vincent Sheheen gave students an overview of state government. The class also got to see both the House and Senate in action and met with the governor’s chief of staff), and Kershaw County Special Olympics. After the video, student speakers from each of the four participating schools gave brief speeches on the topic “The Importance of Student Leadership”. Nathan Lusk represented us (CMA) and gave a wonderful speech. Next, Kershaw County School Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan and our very own Lt. Col. Pat Armstrong presented individual plaques to the Junior Leadership graduates. After that, Laurie Parks announced the winner of the Robert J. Sheheen Outstanding Junior Leadership Student Award. This award went to Camden High School’s Haley Maree. Mrs. Parks concluded the evening by honoring an outgoing member of the Junior Leadership Steering Committee…CMA’s very own, LCDR Doug Marsden. She thanked him for his wonderful, faithful service to Junior Leadership since 1997.
