JUNIOR YOUTH PARLIAMENT: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE July 16, 2013 at 10:34am 16 July 2013 Member for Kiama Gareth Ward is today urging young people aged 12-15 years from across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands to apply to be part of the inaugural YMCA NSW Junior Youth Parliament later this year. Mr Ward said that Junior Youth Parliament was the latest initiative from YMCA NSW which had developed the new program to complement its hugely successful NSW Youth Parliament, which recently concluded its 2013 sitting at NSW Parliament House in Sydney. “The Junior Youth Parliament aims to bring together young people from all around the State to help create change in New South Wales,” he said. “Run by young people, for young people, the program promotes youth-led advocacy, active community leadership and legal and parliamentary education.” Mr Ward said selected participants would spend a week away in camp learning about the role of responsible government, the NSW Parliament and how government interacts with people’s daily lives. “Participants will then be given the opportunity to create their own policies. “This is a terrific opportunity for young people to get involved in issues which affect them whilst learning about leadership, community consultation and public speaking. Mr Ward said the 2013 Junior Youth Parliament would culminate in a two-day sitting in the oldest political chamber in Australia – the NSW Legislative Assembly. “Those young people selected will have a very rare chance to sit where their senior counterparts make policy and debate on the floor of the ‘bear pit’ just like MP’s. “We are fortunate the have many outstanding advocates for young people in our region and I strongly encourage them to come forward and put their hand up to be involved in the 2013 Junior Youth Parliament,” Mr Ward said. For applications or further information about the 2013 NSW Junior Youth Parliament, email co-ordinator Michelle Pandevski at [email protected] or phone YMCA NSW on (02) 9687 6233. Applications close on Friday 30th August 2013.
