JUST A REMINDER, WHEN I READ SOME OF THE POSTS AND THE CLOSING DOWN OF DEBATE. I wrote this in 2010, and it remains relevant. Extremism 5 May 2010 at 21:42 In our search to belong we move to extremities Trying to undo all our previous actions and peculiarities It is safer to disappear into the shadows of the mass They who trumpet the call to repent and confess Our previous lives had apparently been one of play We did not care for something worthwhile they say They say that there is no space for a middle way Our vision would never see the light of day Fearful we become to be excluded and left behind Never again to be considered as another kind Anchored we must be to a homogeneous group Sticking out our head only land us in the soup They make war on those who don’t follow their lead Devoid of compassion they don’t listen to those who plead They force us to think that they are on the right No deviation they tolerate or they put up a fight They claim to be the keepers of all that is pure and holy Legitimising themselves they would even create a phoney We leave wide open the space for interaction and debate They close it down with intolerance and messages of hate See our society change for worse, before our very eyes We fail to seize the moment before our spirit dies Worried about the positions that we hold in society Hamstrung we are in our search for our own sobriety When called upon to defend the values of our nation We rather focus on that which brings narrow salvation For we had become and practise what we detest the most Spectators of the vilest of actions and we become the host Through our continued indifference and the life that we chose Never to be in the front-line against actions that we oppose We have chosen to become old before our time And forever we hear the death bells chime Do we feel swamped by the responsibilities of life? Our energies fading like the cuttings of a knife What would it take for us to rally again? Against all forms of extremism that threaten our gain
