JUST GOT THIS EMAIL AFTER INQUIRING ABOUT THE GHIRARDELLI COMPANIES USE OF PALM OIL :) SOME FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED! --------------------------------- Thank you for taking the time to write us. Your inquiry has been forwarded by our colleagues of Ghirardelli, a 100% subsidiary of the Lindt & Sprüngli Group, to the Central Headquarters in Switzerland. The chocolate mass as basis for our plain chocolate (Lindt AND Ghirardelli) is made with no other vegetable fats than cocoa butter. Only for some of our fillings we use other vegetable fats than cocoa butter and therefore - among others - palm oil for reasons of texture. We share your concerns related to the protection of rainforests and biodiversity and are actively engaged in the area of palm oil, e.g. Lindt & Sprüngli is an active member of the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil which supports the sustainable cultivation of oil palms. Furthermore, we look for alternative fats whenever a new product is developed and via continuous analysis for replacement potential of existing products. At the moment we are sourcing RSPO palm oil through the Book & Claim System and rank - with 11 points out of 12 - among the top performers in the WWFs Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard 2013. As per 2015 we will secure the complete traceability of the whole production chain for sustainable palm oil (segregated palm oil). The shift towards segregated palm oil has already been initiated and will be implemented stepwise until then. 2015 is an at latest deadline, several Lindt production sites will be ready even before that date. We hope this information will convince you that Lindt & Sprüngli is taking the necessary steps to preserve biodiversity and to ensure that this important raw material is produced under ecological aspects.
