JUST RETURNED FROM DR GOADBYS where I shared an enjoyable Breakfast with several men of the Baptist congregation age range 17 to over 75 where we shared and learned of many things, including what day in history we had lived through that made a big impression on us. This ranged from Princess Dianas death, the 9/11 incident, the 2012 Olympics, the last Winter Olympics, the assassination of J F Kennedy, a remembrance of VE Day 1945 and of the Queens Silver Jubilee when a certain 10 year-old was wicket keeper in a neighbourhood boys game of cricket and he bowed down to the top of the stumps just as the batsman swung his bat around to hit the ball, and said wicket keeper got 2 black eyes which he recalls certainly made an impression. WE ALSO DISCUSSED the difference between what we remembered, what was reported at the time, the subsequent theories and what came out 30 years later when secret files became public. Like the FACT that the bullet that actually killed JFK came from the gun of one of the security officers in the car following when said guard fell on his gun and triggered a shot in the wrong direction. The assailant was responsible for other shots but the fatal bullet was an accident. One person present at Breakfast expressed a wish to visit Mars. The planet not the factory. He should book in now with the ruler of Qatar as they are planning such a visit in the 2020s, not that there is as yet any guarantee of returning. Though in fact the first one is to be unmanned. OTHER TOPICS included monitoring teachers at the end of the day who dont switch off classroom lights and computers, climbing in the Alps, cycling, disciplining school children now that hi-tech has removed blackboard rubbers from the classroom, dialects and the fact the Welsh is spoken differently 7 miles apart in Wales and Londoners speak a different English on either side of the River. THE MEAL WAS GOOD TOO - bacon, potato wedge, egg, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and baked beans, with toast, coffee or tea. The service was as excellent as ever and the next one is die in September. DR GOADBY was not there though as he has been resting some time now and the house is called the MAZE restaurant today. He used to serve lovely warm mince-pies to carol singers on wild cold December evenings 60 years ago.
