JUSTIFIED Another word that has much confusion attached to it. Therefore, I will prove from the scripture- King James Bible, that we are justified through faith in Jesus Christ without the works of the law, according to the flesh. However, as James wrote that faith without works is dead. So to obtain justification that is through Jesus Christ, it takes our faith in the Lord and keeping the commandments. See Revelation 14:12. Intro: Its found 39 times in the whole Bible, but only 27 times in the N.T alone. Is that a coincidence? I dont think so. -Think about it. 39x the books of the O.T and 27x- the books in the N.T. Well come back to this later. 1. Websters 1828: 1. To prove or show to be just, or conformable to law, right, justice, propriety or duty; to defend or maintain; to vindicate as right. We cannot justify disobedience or ingratitude to our Maker. We cannot justify insult or incivility to our fellow men. Intemperance, lewdness, profaneness and dueling are in no case to be justified. 2. In theology, to pardon and clear form guilt; to absolve or acquit from guilt and merited punishment, and to accept as righteous on account of the merits of the Savior, or by the application of Christs atonement to the offender. Then theres scripture support: 2. Job a. Job 11:2. Can talk or speech justify you? See Matt. 12:34-37. Yes they can. b. Job 12:1. Job answered. In 13:17-18 he speaks of assurance that he shall be justified in the future. -The words, salvation and saved refer to past, present, and future. All three are important because there are 3 steps to being saved: -Saved from our past life -Saved day by day as we prove our faith by keeping the commandments -And saved from wrath through Christ by enduring into the end. -Its the same with justification. c. Job 25:4 How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? -Thats a good question. d. Job 32:1-2 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 32:2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God. -You see the problem is when people try justifying themselves, it angers God. See Jer. 3:9-12; Ezekiel 16:50-52; Matt. 11:16-19; Lk. 7:29-35; Rom. 2:17-23; 10:1-4. -Some quick notes on Rom. 10:1-4: The flesh seeks its own righteousness (not doing it Gods way), Gen. 4:1-8; Rom. 10:2-5. -Thats why all of our righteousness is as filthy rags, Is. 64:6. 3. Psalms a. Ps. 51:1-4. Its future. -Also see the formula in the text to true repentance. See Lk. 18:10-14; 2 Cor. 7:10. -Paul was quoting Ps. 51:4, which is Torah. See Rom. 3:4. b. Ps. 143:1-2 no man can be justified. What is he talking about? The flesh of man can never be justified. Again, Paul is quoting from Torah in his writings. See 4. Isaiah a. Is. 43:9-11. Let all nations acknowledge that only one God can save his people. -Verses 25-26 only God can justify man and blot out transgressions. b. Is. 45:24-25. All the seed of Israel be justified only through God. See 1 Cor. 4:4-5; 1 Tim. 3:16. -Quick notes on the seed. 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. -Question, do you sin still? Paul did, see Rom. 7:14-25. Thats the explanation of this verse. -But you say, Well Anthony, as Paul wrote that its not really us, but the sin that dwells in us. So we can be born again and still have sin in nature. Check these out: -Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. -Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. -So this means that Noah also sinned. -So wouldnt that mean that we need a new body that wont ever sin? See 1 Cor. 15; Rev. 20. -Lastly, we are grafted into Israel. The gentiles as grafted into Israel becoming one with them: See Matt. 15:21-28; Lk. 15:1-5; Jn. 10:14-28 (the whole chapter is good too); Acts 13:42; Rom. 2:25-29; 3:29-31; chapters 9 and 11; 1 Cor. 12:12-13; Eph. 4:1-4. 5. Acts 13:38-39. Why? See Rom. 9:30-33. a. The root of the problem was they sought it not by faith, vss 31-33. 6. Romans a. Rom. 2:7-13, 25-29. You must become a Jew in heart by works and faith. See Revelation 14:12 Matthew 24:13. b. Rom. 3:19-30. See Is. 43:9-11 and notes. - Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. -Key word is, flesh. -The flesh us weak, Mk. 14:38 -It has no power over the will of God, Jn. 1:13 -The flesh cannot be justified because it is sold to sin, Rom. 8:1-13; 7:14-24. -The flesh seeks its own righteousness (not doing it Gods way), Gen. 4:1-8; Rom. 10:2-5. -Thats why all of our righteousness is as filthy rags, Is. 64:6. -Remember the introduction comment on the word, justified occurring 39x the books of the O.T and 27x- the books in the N.T? Well we proceed here: -Does God ever show respect of persons in judgment? If so then we have at least 7 groups of people that he shows unstable varied judgments to; if it is true we do not have to keep the law. These would be different rules and commandments: Adam to Noah, then Abraham to Moses. Moses to Malachi John the Baptist to Jesus Christ The apostles to Paul The Church to the rapture. Then the Great Tribulation Period to the Millenium of Jesus Christ. The millennium reign of Christ. -That is an unstable God that we believe in and worship. However, if he does not show the respect of persons, then why do Christians claim he gave two different laws: One for the Jew and one for the Christian? That contradicts God not being a respecter of persons. c. Rom. 3:30-31; 4:1-3. -The key word Is, flesh. See Titus 3:5-7. -Also see notes for Rom. 3:19-30. d. Rom. 5:1-5. -Vss. 8-11 his blood shall declare us righteous, but we were only cleansed from our past. See Rom. 2:4; 3:23-26; 1 Cor. 6:9-11. -Also, see Rev. 14:12 for patience (Rom. 5:3). e. Rom. 8:29-30 the word, foreknow is key. But that doesnt mean we have eternal life now. See Rom. 2:4; 3:23-26. -See Galatians 2:16-21. Once again, the key word is, flesh, vs 16. See Rom. 8:1-17. -Also Gal. 3:1-19. The key word is, flesh, vs 3. See Rom. 8:1-17. Compare with Matt. 11:12-13; Lk. 16:16. 6. How about Galatians 5:1-6? Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. a. Question is, what is bondage? -Its oppression: Ex. 1:14; 2:23; 6:5-6; 20:2. 20:2 was during the giving of the law. So, why would God take them out of 400 plus years of bondage; and give them a law- putting them back into bondage? Wheres the logic in that? -Side note. You know how people will give the L symbol with her hand and put it to their forehead? To them it means loser. But did you know that if you do the symbol with your left hand and look in the mirror its the L looking toward you? And is it a coincidence that they put it on there forehead? Check this out. Romans 7:25 ....So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God.... Good Lord has a sense of humor. b. Bondage is living in the flesh: Rom. 8:12-15; Gal. 4:3-5; 2 Pet. 2:18-22. -Christ stated that we can be free from this bondage: Jn. 8:31-33. He defined what sin is in vs34/ 1 Jn. 3:4. Thats not an accident. Pay attention to numerology. c. Acts 15:10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? -Why? See Rom. 9:30-33. Acts 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. -Remember what God said to cain, Gen. 4:7? d. Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. -So they kept the Sabbath? How is it bondage if they read Moses every Sabbath? Also take note that it pleased the apostles, vs 22. Proverbs 4:2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. -What is sin? Breaking Gods commandments 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 7. James 2 a. Jas. 2:8-13 -See Matt. 22:35-40 (cross reference with Mk. 12:28-31). b. Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. -Did you get that? It said all the law and the prophets. Jesus Christs main point was that if you do love the Lord with a circumcised heart onto him, that through faith you can do all these commandments because its his strength through your love for him that enables you to do it. Thats why on those two commandments hang ALL the law. c. 5. Why do Christians state 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 claiming that all Scripture is profitable for doctrine, but then turn around and tell their congregations that James and Hebrews are not for us..... but then they go back and pick and choose what verses they want to use out of those two books such as Heb. 10:25? Thats contradictory. d. If the claim from most Christians is true that the book of James is not to us, then why is it included in the Canon? -However, if you do agree with the scripture of 2nd Timothy 3:16 that all Scripture (including Hebrews and James) is profitable for doctrine, then why dont most Christians believe what James chapter 2 says that faith without works is dead?
