JWC 2014: Fiji 19-48 Wales (full-time) Fiji Juniors played some - TopicsExpress

JWC 2014: Fiji 19-48 Wales (full-time) Fiji Juniors played some good rugby overall today against the 2013 runners-up, but the Welsh hammered our boys in the scrums, got two penalty tries and another pushover. Fiji were not helped by two yellow cards in the first half (one erroneously awarded by Kiwi asst ref Paul Williams for a non-existent strike after the hooter). Great try from skipper Tabualevu with build-up from fullback Tuicakau and wing Nawaqaliva showed how dangerous Fiji can be, and a driving try from Robarobalevu kept Fiji close. Half-time: 12-29. Despite playing with 14 men for first 10 mins of second half, Fiji fought well and only conceded more points when back to a full complement via a second penalty try. After sustained pressure, Fijis third try from replacement prop Toga narrowed the score to 19-43, but a late and rather suspect Welsh try in the corner ended the game. This last try was awarded after a language miscommunication between ref and touch judge, who recommended a review but the Japanese ref thought he said award the try. The replay showed it could have been either short or lost forward. Well, Fiji did well in the line-outs, winning 14 of their 16 throws, but were pulverised in the scrum, especially after the break. The FRU HPU need to devote far more resources into this area.
