Jack Bauer Philosophy P4: BACK! So we talked about honor. With ethics there is a wide variety of core values that coincide with honor. I guess the next question would be What is duty?. Duty is a moral or legal obligation; a responsibility. Or a task or action that someone is required to perform. We all have duties in our lives. So now lets look at Jack. Jack has done so much for the 24 world, we could spend days talking about each thing he did. I picked two cases for the example. First in 24: Redemption (TV Movie), Jack is trying to be free from the US after the US turned their back on him. He is in fictional Sangola, Africa were he takes refuge in a charitable school ran by a former Special Forces partner. Not to go through the whole movie, but at the end Jack is faced with a dilemma. Save the children and turn himself in to the US (via subpoena) or keep on moving but let the kids die in the government overthrow. Jack of course turned himself in. Second scenario was a really dark and crazy situation. In season three, Jack is faced with an extremely hard decision. Kill Ryan Chapelle (Deputy Division Director of CTU) to give CTU more time to stop a virus outbreak, or let the virus run rapid in Los Angles. Even the President (Palmer) was briefed and gave Jack the go ahead to as ordered. Jack emotionally drained and not wanting to kill Chapelle, executed Chapelle and let the terrorists get the body. So how does this tie into duty? In Jacks world he has to perform many tasks for the greater good. Sometimes deemed as unmoral, Jacks duty is to the American people at whatever it takes. This puts hard choices at his feet. So now lets tie this into us. We as everyday people have duties or obligations. Sometimes these duties effect our lives in harsh ways. Yet our honor takes charge and we accomplish our duties even when we could lose or have a moment of pain. Stand your ground and do your duty! You will be truly respected for at whatever outcome happens! Have a blessed day!
