By Andy Zunz December 2, 2014 5:36 p.m. Follow Me: Twitter @golfweekzunz The United States Congress passed legislation Monday to award the Congressional Gold Medal to golf legend Jack Nicklaus. The medal, an expression of appreciation to distinguished citizens, has been awarded to the likes of Neil Armstrong, Jesse Owens, Rosa Parks and Arnold Palmer over the past two centuries. The legislation is awaiting President Barack Obamas signature for approval. Jack Nicklaus is a legend, and without a doubt the greatest golfer of all time. Yet in addition to the Golden Bears career in golf, he is a dedicated philanthropist who has made a difference in communities across America, said U.S. Senator Rob Portman (Ohio), who co-sponsored the legislation with Senator Sherrod Brown (Ohio). Nicklaus, the all-time leader in major championship victories with 18, was born in Columbus, Ohio. I had the fortunate pleasure in 2012 to attend and participate in Arnolds Congressional Gold Medal ceremony, and I witnessed how special and meaningful it was to him, Nicklaus said. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to experience that, as well, and to be a part of a very special group of past recipients. - Information from Nicklaus, Jack Nicklaus website, was used in this report Latest Related Headlines Lure of LPGA Q-School puts top teams in limbo Tiger Woods returns with polished, familiar swing Mickelson, Yount qualify for U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Welcome to Golfweeks comments section.
