Jackson, 30, was charged May 27, 2011, after her 18-month-old son, Marquell, was found strangled and badly beaten in an alley trash bin behind their apartment building in the 2300 block of Jefferson Avenue. The boy’s grandmother had called police to report him missing about 6:15 a.m. that day. Police found no signs of a break-in at Jackson’s apartment and searched the neighborhood for the boy. About 30 minutes later, police found Marquell dead in the trash bin. He had suffered brain trauma, neck injuries, multiple rib fractures and multiple liver lacerations resulting in internal bleeding. His body, wrapped in a jacket, lay atop a bed of plastic trash bags full of crumpled Stag beer cans, soiled paper towels and cardboard boxes. Susan Ryan, a spokeswoman for St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, confirmed charges were dropped Friday. Ryan would not give an explanation, citing Joyce’s policy of never discussing closed cases. Ryan said anyone with information about the case is asked to call police.
