Jacksons Bay rescue debrief...earlier today I was paddling with Elan Rhys Winter (Rescue hero from Up&Under, red pants, orange boat you know). Anyway it was sheet rain, blowing a gale and the surf was monstrous. We had just launched from Jascksons Bay when we heard a bone chilling scream from the beach. There was a red dog ball in the water. I spotted it through the storm waves, it was slipping under the waves, there was no time to radio the call in. So I made a dash for it, all that sprint training had paid off. I caught the ball by the rope just as it went under the surface and lifted it onto my deck. With the added weight the waves were pushing me over. I could see Elan was trying his hardest to get to me but I had to make a decision. I went in backwards. I figured if the ball was washed from my deck I could see the waves coming and catch it. Feet from the beach I threw the ball to safety. The look on the dogs face was a reward in itself, Im sure you all would have done the same thing in my situation. But let that be a lesson to us all, look after your balls.
