Jacksonville (University) Junior College This is a 1950 picture of the Founders Building taken from the 1951 Arlington Lions Club Directory. The University was founded in 1934 and called Jacksonville Junior College. Located in Riverside, In 1944-45 the school began a rapid growth and foreseeing the probability of continued growth they bought 150 acres at the intersection of Chaseville and Merrill roads. In April of 1950. The construction of the modern facility was started and the first unit was finished in October of the same year. With the growing population of Duval County The trustees decided to make it a four year school and it became Jacksonville University in October of 1956. Chaseville Road was renamed University Blvd January 1st, 1959. The land itself has a lot of history behind it. There are small Indian mounds in the area, Then during the English occupation of Florida it was part of a 7,000 acre plantation of Samuel Potts (Pottsburg creek). During the second Spanish period it was part of a grant to Francis Richard. It later was the site of a small plantation called Chesterfield which belonged to Anna Kingsley. When the college bought it, it was Merrills blueberry farm. As a point of interest I went there for a year (54-55) after graduating from Landon H. S. and took pre-engineering. 23 years later I got a degree from UNF. Cleve
