Jacob was a conniving swindler who manipulated people and situations to get his way. His parents, Isaac and Rebekah, first noticed these personality traits as he left the womb! He had a hold of his twin brothers heel! Eventally, God ended Jacobs moving-without-Him by popping his hip out of joint when Jacob wrestled with God. Do you remember that when Jacob last saw his brother, Esau, Esau was wanting to kill him!? Then, years later, as Jacob was returning, he received word that his brother Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men. Nervous, Jacob divided his party into two groups and sent everyone ahead of himself, that way if Esau attacked, Jacob could escape once again! But that night, God said Not this time, and when the two had wrestled, God left Jacob crippled so that he could not escape, even if he tried. We have a tendency to manipulate our situations, and sometimes people, to make things work for us, or in a manner that suits or objectives. God forbid we not see ourselves as God does, and have to have our hips popped out of joint (metaphorically speaking). But alas, Gods mercy surpasses understanding, and because we deserve more severe chastisement than hips out of joint, at times, we can thank God in all things.
