James 5:12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your YEA be YEA; and [your] NAY, NAY; lest ye fall into condemnation. Matthew 5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is Gods throne: 5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 5:37 But let your communication be, YEA, YEA; NAY, NAY: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Judges Chapter 9 Principle, Not Policy, Must Control.--Had the Israelites preserved a clear perception of right and wrong, they would have seen the fallacy of Abimelechs reasoning, and the injustice of his claims. They would have seen that he was filled with envy, and actuated by a base ambition to exalt himself by the ruin of his brethren. Those who are controlled by policy rather than by principle are not to be trusted. They will pervert the truth, conceal facts, and construe the words of others to mean that which was never intended. They will employ flattering words, while the poison of asps is under their tongue. HE WHO DOES NOT EARNESTLY SEEK THE DIVINE GUIDANCE WILL BE DECEIVED BY THEIR SMOOTH WORDS AND THEIR ARTFUL PLANS (ST Aug. 4, 1881). {2BC 1005.1}
