James Dinsmore was a Dartmouth College graduate from New Hampshire, and moved to Natchez (Miss.) Territory where he acquired land and accumulated wealth in the sugar plantation industry. In 1829 he married Martha Macomb, daughter of Alexander Macomb. The well-to-do Dinsmores traveled to Cincinnati to visit James’ uncle, Silas Dinsmoor, originally appointed as United States Agent to the Cherokee and Choctaw by George Washington and was later reappointed by Thomas Jefferson. Before relocating to Louisiana, Martha gave birth to her first child, Isabella, at the home of Silas Dinsmoor, who kept the original spelling of the family name. The following contains a brief history of Silas Dinsmoor. We are here as a museum today because SIlas Dinsmore believed Boone County, Kentucky was the best and most healthful, and the land rich and the most beautiful in the country. He convinced James to build a homestead here.
