James H. Blume Sr. FOREST HILL — James H. Blume, Sr., age 79, had his faith turned into sight when he departed this life and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday morning, September 1, 2013. Jim died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Forest Hill, West Virginia. Born at Lookout, West Virginia, April 7, 1934, Jim moved to Forest Hill at age 12. He graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1953. He then joined the United States Navy, serving on the carrier USS Valley Forge, and was honorably discharged in September 1958. Returning to Hinton, Jim settled into family life with his high school sweetheart, Emma “Pat” Tilley, whom he married on December 9, 1954. He began working in sales at the O.R. Grimmett Motor Company, then moved to Brown Tractor, Inc., the local Massey Ferguson dealer located at Willowwood. Jim eventually bought the franchise, moved it to Forest Hill, and grew it into one of the largest and most successful agricultural businesses in West Virginia. During this time, he also worked in several other businesses, providing many services to the residents of Summers County and surrounding areas. He was a charter member of both the Hinton Jaycees and the Summers County Farm Bureau. Jim was a great athlete in his day, being a key member of his beloved Forest Hill High School basketball and baseball teams. Committed to giving back to the community through sports, Jim was involved for many seasons coaching basketball, baseball and football. Jim was elected Sheriff of Summers County in November 1980, and served two terms from January 1981 through December 1988. Shortly after, he accepted a position as a Field Auditor for the Treasurer for the State of West Virginia, which he continued to hold at the time of his death. Jim strove to live out his Christian faith. He was an active and faithful member of Countryside Baptist Church in Forest Hill. Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert of Crystal River, FL, and Basil of Fayette County, as well as his dearly loved son-in-law, William “Willie” Shank. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Emma “Pat” Tilley Blume. Three children, Dr. James H. Blume, Jr., and wife Sally of Forest Hill, Cathy Elizabeth Shank of Forest Hill and Paul A. Blume and wife Robin of Fairdale, WV. Eleven grandchildren, James H. “Jamie” Blume and wife Melanie, Chris Blume and wife Tiffany, Mindy, Alandra, Stephanie, Bryanna, David, Peyton and Bria Blume and Nicole and Amber Harvey. Three great-grandchildren, Jake, Natalie and Emma Blume. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Brother James L. Jones officiating. Private interment ceremony will be held at the family cemetery near Forest Hill. Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Chris, Jamie and David Blume, Tommy Harvey, Gary Browning, Charlie Fleshman, Bill Jeffries and Ricky Ford. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Roop, Bill Mitchell, Conrad Graham, Paul Blankenship, Tom and Elmer Wykle, Ferrell Burdette and James Ford.
