James Lanska worked on a student research project as a VA volunteeer. James, son of Tomah VA Dr. Doug Lanska, submitted two abstracts and both were accepted for presentation at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Philadelphia on May 5, 2014. There were several medical students and neurology residents who presented their reearch there, but he was the youngest presenter at the meeting and the only high school student who was selected to present. James projects concerned the Pulfrich effect and its use in clinical neurology. As a result of a delay of perception in one eye, an object moving across the field of view is seen as travelling along a curved course, so a pendulum swinging from side to side is seen as moving in an ellipse if a grey filter is placed over one eye, and the direction of this movement reverses if the filter is placed over the other eye. The same thing happens to patients who have damage to the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Patients notice that moving objects appear to move in misleading ways, which can interfere with driving or playing sports.
