James M. Gears Miller, 72, of Elkton, MD where he had lived since 1988, died October 14, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington. Mr. Miller was born in Chester, the son of the late James and Anna (Strzala) Miller. He attended Resurrection of Our Lord School and graduated from St. James High School with the Class of 1959. Jim was employed as an operator by PECO for 33 years, retiring in 1992. Known as Gears, The Joker and Gym, Jim was a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Delaware Valley Chapter inducted in 2010, as well as a member of the Delaware County PA Athletes Hall of Fame inducted in 2009 both for his fast pitch in softball. Jim was an accomplished pitcher having recorded 305 wins including several perfect games. In 1972, he helped Maxmillians Bar to the Class A ASA PA State Championship. He was also an accomplished bowler participating in a number of senior tournaments throughout the country and has five 300 games recorded by the Professional Bowling Association. Jim was predeceased by two sisters Elaine McCarthy and Patricia Willard. Survivors: Two daughters Tracy Miller (Christopher Swirchak) of Philadelphia, and Lori Anderson (James) of Bethlehem brothers Thomas Miller of Nottingham, Michael Miller of Media, sister Joanne Laird of Wilmington, and 3 grandchildren. Services: Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, 7:00 p.m., Carr Funeral Home, 935 S. Providence Rd. (Rt. 320), Wallingford, where friends may call after 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers: Contributions may be made in his memory to the St. James Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 1499 East 9th Street, Eddystone, PA 19022 Condolences may be sent to: CarrFuneralHome.net
