James McCrum, a supervisor at Garber Chevrolet in Midland, Michigan, was presented this week with a Patriot Award by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. McCrum was nominated for the award by Jeffrey DeHaan, a Navy Reserve Petty Officer who drills at the Saginaw Naval Reserve Center. Toni Hubbard, Garber’s Parts Department Manager, had received a similar award earlier and was present at the ceremony. She commented that Garber likes to have military reservist and veterans on staff, because they have discipline and get the job done. In making the award nomination, DeHaan said he could not perform his military duties without the positive support and attitude of Mr. McCrum, and the dealership. When I was getting ready to ask for time off for a training mission, he cut me off before I even finished the request and told me he would support anything I needed, he said. DeHaans next reserve event will be in California in April, when he will carry out orders to train with a Navy assault craft unit in San Diego. Garbers General Manager, Michael Weinert, also signed an ESGR statement of support for display at the dealership this week. “Garber Chevrolet and the entire Garber Automotive Group have been long-time supports in hiring military reservists and veterans, we feel it is our duty to give back to the people that help defend out country,” he noted.
