James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States and the last president who was a Founding Father. Monroe rose to national prominence as a diplomat in France, when he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 which is considered the greatest real estate deal in history. The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,000 square miles of Frances claim to the territory of Louisiana in 1803. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and opened up the continent to its westward expansion.
