Crime-fiction king James Patterson’s plan is to sell a very special edition of his new novel Private Vegas – the title a nod to the lonesome plight of the superrich? – for $300,000 (£198,000), to tempt those in a similar income bracket. And in a further twist for those seeking pointless ways to squander their stacks, the buyer doesn’t even get to keep the book – it will explode a day after it’s been opened. (It is an interestingly paradoxical self-estimation of the value of his work: on the one hand, 300K’s worth, on the other – entirely disposable.)
