Jamyes Vision My name is Jamye Hughes, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to share my thoughts with you all. I am also very excited to officially announce that I am running to be your next Sheriff here in Granville County. The decision to run for Sheriff was not one that my family and I took lightly; rather it was a deliberate process with consideration given to a multitude of factors. Some of these factors are personal, such as the impact that my running for and serving as your Sheriff will have on my family. Other factors that we considered are professional, such as what does Jamye Hughes, a dedicated 21-year veteran of the law enforcement profession; have to offer as Granville County’s chief law enforcement officer. At the conclusion of this process, my family and I decided that any negative effects that my seeking and holding the Office of Sheriff would have on our family would be minimal, when compared to the positive impact that I would have on the Sheriff’s Office and ultimately the citizens of Granville County. I stand before you today with a message concerning my strategic vision as your next Sheriff. This vision is comprised of three distinct principles that I have been consistently passionate about throughout my law enforcement career: professionalism, equality, and community. The base of my strategic vision is professionalism, for without it the remainder of my vision is simply not possible. While the Granville County Sheriff’s Office is staffed with many dedicated professionals, I strongly believe that these dedicated county employees and the citizens they serve deserve better. My intent related to professionalism is twofold, and involves enhancing the professionalism of both the Sheriff’s Office and those employed by the Sheriff. In order to enhance the professionalism of the Sheriff’s Office and its personnel to a level I regard as appropriate and necessary, I am determined to seek the accreditation of the Granville County Sheriff’s Office by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The following goals of CALEA come directly from their website (calea.org) and include: -Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities -Formalize essential management procedures -Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices -Improve service delivery -Solidify inter-agency cooperation and coordination -Increase community and staff confidence in the agency It is my strong belief that a CALEA accredited Sheriff’s Office will play a large role in establishing the level of professionalism that I believe is crucial to the future of the office, its personnel, and the county that they serve. I believe that equality is a fundamental principle of the law enforcement profession, and one that I feel ties together my vision related to professionalism and community. Equality is typically thought of as being without bias. While my vision related to equality will certainly meet the expectation that the Sheriff’s Office provide law enforcement services to the citizens of this county equally and without bias, it also goes far beyond that. The beyond portion of my vision of equality refers to the equal distribution of law enforcement services provided by the Sheriff’s Office. As your next Sheriff, I will vigorously strive to ensure that all communities, neighborhoods, and citizens within the county have equal access to the services provided by the Sheriff’s Office. Community is the pinnacle of my strategic vision, a highpoint that is supported by the principles of professionalism and equality. As my journey to become your next Sheriff progresses, I will expand further on the details related to this portion of my vision. However, I believe refocusing the Sheriff’s Office on the philosophy of community policing is key to enforcing my strategic vision, and I have several initiatives in mind that I feel will nest well with the needs of the community. I moved to Granville County 36 years ago, married my wife Tori in Wilton, and helped raise four children in this fine county. Just as Granville County has grown considerably during this time, so too must the Sheriffs vision. I have the desire to be your next Sheriff. I am committed to the principles of professionalism, equality, and community; and I have the professional knowledge and experience to deliver my vision. With your support... and vote, I will be honored to serve as your next Sheriff. Thank you for your time! Sincerely, Jamye Hughes
