Jan 1, Gen The thing is, there is a lot in this first reading, the last few years I have skipped over the Adam/Eve thing, but this year I want to discuss this topic, sometimes with tongue firmly in cheek. Lets review what we know, have surmised and what crazy ideas have come from this. We know Adam came first, right? Wait a minute, Gen 1: 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Hard to tell from this description, lets read on. Moses tells us in chapter 2 a more exact timetable. Gen 2: 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Then Moses tells us God created the garden of eden and put this male creature to work it. Work it, i always see pics of the garden of Adam and Eve lounging around eating fruit, not working. Gen 2: 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Ok, a little maintenance maybe. Then the dire warning of what will change the world for all to come until the judgement. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Surely you can eat plenty without eating that one tree! Enter stage left, the wo-man, taken from the rib of man. The Hebrew Bible calls it angular organ, i guess rib will have to do. We know the serpent( devil-dragon-beast) tempted Eve and she tasted the forbidden fruit. How exactly did this come down? Gen 3: 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Men like to kid and say that women were the cause of the fall, but it appears that Adam was right there and did nothing to prevent this disaster. Looks like we get to share the blame. Each assumed blame and responsibility for all of history, To Eve he said 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Dont forget that last part ladies. :-) And to the man “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. Ouch Death raises its ugly head. And now a bit of light hearted silliness, the fable of Lilith. Lilith is a Hebrew name for a figure in Jewish mythology, developed earliest in the Babylonian Talmud, who is generally thought to be in part derived from a historically far earlier class of female demons. In Jewish folklore, from the 8th–10th century Alphabet of Ben Sira onwards, Lilith becomes Adams first wife, who was created at the same time and from the same earth as Adam. This contrasts with Eve, who was created from one of Adams ribs. The legend was greatly developed during the Middle Ages, in the tradition Jewish mysticism. For example, in the 13th century writings of Rabbi Isaac ben Jacob ha-Cohen, Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him ( first female lib) and then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she coupled with the archangel Samael. The resulting Lilith legend is still commonly used as source material in modern Western culture, literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror.
