Jan 3 - sad news, when does it stop? My poor Hazel cow has died. She was due to calve in April, our first calf on the farm from our own bottle raised baby! I was so excited about that, but here we are, learning more lessons once again. There is something called Blackleg that can affect cattle and sheep and my poor Hazel and Brutus both were not vaccinated for it. The sheep have been, so they are okay. But a simple $5 vaccination could have saved both of them... sigh Oh the things we learn as we go along. I just hate that I have to re-learn something the hard way, that someone else already knew. So, Goodbye to my momma cow - she was a great lot of fun, always getting into trouble of some kind. I am sure she is heading off into the sunset with her tail up and nose to the wind, just like she used to do. Now to find a new baby to start over again... this sets us 3 years behind. Hazel was a bottle baby 2 years ago that I fought to save because I wanted her to have a calf and build up a small herd for us. A heifer would either mean $.$$ selling her or another momma to have a baby in a few years... a bull calf would have meant food in the freezer for us... but this loss puts us way back - so far behind once again... that starting over is a hard thing to think about. It takes so much time.... but time is something I have lots of I guess. I like to have the babies born to calm mommas - thats how I want my animals here to be, used to me and calm enough for me to touch and help if there is a need for help. My sheep are like that and my bunnies... the pigs - not so much but thats okay because I dont like them either!!! So, on to new adventures for this year... hopefully we can find a baby calf for me to raise up again..... If any of you remember... Hazle was the calf who dumped my camera into the milk pail when she was a baby... oh the memories... for them I am grateful but oh the time and the cost... sigh Sad Karry Ann and Kritter Krew.
