Jan 6 – Happy Epiphany!! -Sid Barrett would be 68. Angus Young is 59. - Joan of Arc aka “The Maid of Orleans”: Joan said she received visions of the Archangel Michael instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence after the siege was lifted in only nine days. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VIIs coronation. She was captured by the allied English-Burgundian faction. She was later handed over to the English, and then put on trial by a pro-English Bishop on a variety of charges. After she was declared guilty, she was burned at the stake dying at about nineteen years of age. Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, debunked the charges against her, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonizedin 1920. - Jozef Maximilian Petzval: A mathematician, inventor and physicist. Petzval is considered to be one of the main founders of geometrical optics, modern photography and cinematography. Among his inventions are the Petzval portrait lens and opera glasses, both still in common use today. He is also credited with the discovery of the Laplace transform. The Laplace transform is a widely used integral transform in mathematics and electrical engineering that transforms a function of time into a function of complex frequency. The inverse Laplace transform takes a complex frequency domain function and yields a function defined in the time domain. Given a simple mathematical or functional description of an input or output to a system, the Laplace transform provides an alternative functional description that often simplifies the process of analyzing the behavior of the system, or in synthesizing a new system based on a set of specifications. So, for example, Laplace transformation from the time domain to the frequency domain transforms differential equations into algebraic equations and convolution into multiplication. The Laplace transform the output of a linear time invariant system can be calculated by convolving its unit impulse response with the input signal. Performing this calculation in Laplace space turns the convolution into a multiplication; the latter being easier to solve because of its algebraic form. It’s the kind of math that you probably don’t want to skip 1101 to 1304. But when the day comes and you experience a sudden and striking insight and understanding of differential equations, how fun electrical and nuclear engineering must be. And if you get it wrong, its just the end of the world so no stress.
