Jan Tufte nailed it in her letter to the editor in the Columbus Republic. Jan, I have never met you but I love you!! #theowsleysthankyou #aneducationfortherepublic #tellthemlikeitis From: Jan Tufte Las Vegas The following is an excerpt from a Nov. 14 article published in The Republic regarding a continuation of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Merit Board review surrounding the firing of Deputy E. DeWayne Janes Sr.: “Janes’ involvement in the April 7, 2013, investigation into the death of Cary Owsley, who was married to Janes’ ex-wife, led to allegations of misconduct and coverup from the victim’s sister, Cheryl Jackson, who has asked to address the board at the upcoming hearing.” I find it terribly disturbing that not all of the facts surrounding the allegations, specifically the outcome of those allegations, are represented in this article. The writer conveyed to your readers that there were “allegations of misconduct” into Janes’ actions related to the handling of the death of Cary Owsley, when in fact Janes was given a suspension by the sheriff’s department related directly and specifically to his conduct and wrongdoing in that investigation. The following more clearly defines the action that took place: Led to allegations of misconduct and coverup from the victim’s sister, the outcome of which was the internal punishment and reprimand of Deputy Janes and others by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department. This factual information is and has been readily available regarding the death and the investigation into the death of Cary Owsley and the department issued suspensions and demotions of some of the officers involved. I am sure you will agree that the absence of words can be used by a writer to evoke to their readers a far different conclusion to a news article.
