Jan watches the newspaper for places for us to visit. She saved an article on Joshua Tree National Park from the Argus of February 2010 so we made this 800,000 acre park our third national park on this trip. We visited the southern desert area of the park the first day, then drove around the west end of the park to the northern entrance at Twentynine Palms, California on May 8th. Here we found the forests of dagger-leaf Joshua Tree plants for which the national monument was named. Early Mormons, who named the trees, thought they looked like the prophet Joshua summoning his followers. You can also see the spindly branches of the ocotillo plant in one of the photos. The park’s other noted image is its rock piles. Jan and I walked the 1.7 mile round trip Skull Rock Trail through a dry creek bed and up over rocky areas to get to Skull Rock that I am photographing here.
