Jane Goes to the State Farmers Market: I returned for a second - TopicsExpress

Jane Goes to the State Farmers Market: I returned for a second visit on Sunday to the big fall plant event at the market this weekend. One of the vendors had a huge pile of kale and cabbage, all sorts of varieties. I was familiar with all but one. Now, Im pretty sure I was an anomaly at this event. Everyone else was gathering up these ornamental cabbages to stick all over their yard and were asking questions about how they would look. Me? I was wondering what things tasted like!! Here I was, this big 2-footed, upright rabbit in their midst and they did not realize that their plants were in danger. I felt it would be impolite to start nibbling so I approached the vendor and asked if the plant I was eyeing was indeed another kale? Yes, was the response. Great! Would she mind if I tasted it? She paused, looked puzzled, and said, I guess you could, but why would you want to? At that point, I smiled and informed her that their huge display of kale was also a marvel of health restoring natural resources, capable of saving lives. So, I went on my way, found a tender, center leaf, and fell in love with a new variety of kale that tasted amazingly SWEET!!! It was just like fresh, tender broccoli! I bought the big plant, have it in its new home outside, and will endeavor to locate seeds for this distinctive variety. Im giving it a couple of days to adjust before we start chowing down on it.
