Janet and I had the honor of visiting the Battlefield at Shiloh & Pittsburg Landing in southern Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. The first picture below is the Wisconsin Monument for our fallen from the 14th, 16th, and 18th Wisconsin regiments. This monument is just behind the Hornets Nest where the Confederates captured 2100 Union soldiers on the first day of the battle, April 6. Involved were three armies, the Ohio, Tennessee, and Mississippi. There were nearly 24,000 casualties, 3500 dead, and the largest battery of cannon ever seen on the northern hemisphere! Killed on the Confederate side is the highest ranking American general ever to die in battle - General Johnston. Absolutely heart wrenching and solemn walking on this sacred ground.
