Jang orders demolition of houses along water channels Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, has ordered the demolition of houses along waters channels as part of efforts to curb cases of flooding in the state. The governor also gave assurance that he would complete all projects embarked upon by his administration before May 29 next year. The governor, who said these on Wednesday while inspecting some projects in the Jos metropolis, frowned on people who build illegally on water ways channels, and subjecting the state to flooding. He also directed the the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development to pull down any structure obstructing the smooth passage of water in the state. Jang said, “One thing I have observed along most of the roads is people building right in to the water ways, and I have given directive to the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development to ensure that all these houses are demolished. They are illegal structures, they don’t have any building Plan. “I wonder if they have Certificate of Occupancy but if the Ministry of Lands and Survey did their usual thing by given them Certificate of Occupancy in those areas and we will have to find out from the files who issued those certificates and they will be disciplined accordingly. These are illegal structures. I don’t expect to pay any compensation before demolishing them. “This is an information to the owners, they will be written and they will be given a little time to pack out so that we can clear the water ways. We can see the course of change in the whole weather; rain is becoming heavier and these areas have started flooding.” Speaking on the construction of New Government House that gulped over N5bn, Jang said, “I have been putting a lot of pressure on them because we want to move the Government House there before the termination of this administration. We want the new administration to take over from that new Government House and they have brought the work to the timing that we want.” - The Punch
