Janis Joplin was born on this day in 1943. In 1971 Janis hit the top of the charts worldwide with the Kris Kristofferson penned “Me And Bobby McGee”. Her posthumously released album Pearl also went to No.1 in the USA. Janis died on October 4th 1970 after an accidental heroin overdose and was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles then her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach. Janis had her on version of the blues, she was raucous, frantic, souly, vibrant and touching. Pearl was a rekid that wasn’t really completely finished before she passed, yet studio work by her backing band Full Tilt Boogie created a seminal female rock/blues LP. Pearl is a truly extraordinary album which displays is the range and emotions which Janis voice was capable of. Janis’ vocal performance on Pearl stretches from gentle and tender in a “Woman Thats Lonely” to a pained and mournful “Cry Baby” to the witty & cackling in Mercedes Benz. They just dont make them like Janis anymore. In todays age of gratuitous vocal overdubbing, same-same pseudo R& B’ers with endless studio-sparkle, very rarely do vocalists exhibit the immense oomph that was evident in almost every note Janis ever recorded.
