Janis Lyn Joplin was born on this day, in 1943, Port Arthur, Texas. She was an out cast in her home town or as she put it, I was a misfit. I read, I painted, I didnt hate niggers. As a teenager, she became friends with out misfits, who turned her on to such Blues artist as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Lead Belly. Janis went to the University of Texas at Austin for a while but eventually ended up going to Big Brother and the Holding Company, in 1964. By 1965, she was back in Port Arthur, recovering from the effects of her intravenous methamphetamine habit. Janis would return to San Francisco, after being invited to join Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her breakout performance would be at the Monterey Pop Festival, in June of 1967. Janis was dubbed the Queen of Psychedelic Soul, Janis would leave Big Brother, in December of 1968. She would form the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Janis would appear at Woodstock, in August of 1969, as one of the headliners. In 1970 Janis recorded her best received album Pearl . On October 4, 1970, Janiss body would be found at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood. Her road manager, John Cooke found Janis. She had died from a heroin overdose. Janis lived her life on her own terms and she left us with a legend. Lets begin our Birthday tribute with, Black Mountain Blues a Bessie Smith cover.
