January 11, 2015 – Human Trafficking Awareness Day In 2007 the U.S. Senate designated January 11 as a National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness in an effort to raise consciousness about this global, national, and local issue. In 2010-2015, President Barack Obama proclaimed January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. In his 2015 World Day of Peace Message, “No Longer Slaves, But Brothers and Sisters,” Pope Francis calls on all of us to join him in making a commitment to end human trafficking. “We are facing a global phenomenon which exceeds the competence of any one community or country…. I urgently appeal to all men and women of good will…who witness the scourge of contemporary slavery not to become accomplices to this evil, not to turn away from the sufferings of our brothers and sisters… who are deprived of their freedom and dignity.” —Pope Francis On January 11, the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center invites us to gather with others and use this prayer service for an end to trafficking, ipjc.org/links/HumanTraffickingAwarenessDay-PrayerService2015.pdf. Let us cry out with one voice in prayer to end the scourge of human trafficking.
