January 16th Day 4 I Can Statements: I can use non-standard measurement to measure vertical height (2nd-4th grade). I can use non-standard measurement to measure length (kindergarten and 1st grade). January continues to be cold outside, but inside STEM is just heating up in our measurement unit, Rulers of STEM. This unit focuses on grade appropriate measurement using the U.S. Standard System of measuring. Today all grade levels focused on non-standard measuring; measuring without a ruler. The 2nd-4th grade used paper collected that would have normally ended up in the recycle bin and developed a data table to record their measurement data. Using amazing animal figures, students estimated how many unifix cubes it would take to go from bottom to top and then measured the actual vertical height. After measurements were complete, we re-recycled the data sheets and turned them into the Dynamic Dart airplane using a non-fiction book purchased through the donation given by the Spring Lake Schools Foundation. Student homework is to fly the planes at home and then talk about the measuring they did in class! Please post any pics! The kindergartners and first graders rotated through three centers today. One center was a purposeful build using LEGOs, the second center was practicing keyboarding on iPads using the app ABC Keyboard, and the final center was similar non-standard measuring; although the little ones focused on measuring length (or as we say the distance from side to side, or the distance from left to right, or the distance from right to left). My smile from the day came from the multiple tooting sounds the k-students made as they lifted the back ends of the animals... yes, it was mainly boys (what is it with us). I hope you enjoy todays video. Have a great day! Love, Mr. Overway vimeo/117007905
