He was born on February 20, 1848 in New York. He dropped out of school at 14 to work on Wall Street. By age 22, he had a seat on the NY Stock Exchange. After he bought the Union Pacific, he inspected every mile of the aging rail system. In 1899, he organized a scientific exploration of the Alaska coastline. His estate outside New York City is now Harriman State Park. He died on September 9, 1909.
