January 19, 2015 3:46 am Maritime equipment GE wins order for ship electric propulsion systems from Kawasaki Heavy TOKYO -- General Electric is entering the Japanese maritime equipment market after snagging an order for electronic propulsion systems from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which is building two liquefied natural gas carriers. Japanese shipbuilding is making a comeback as the yen slides, and more LNG carriers are expected to be built for imports of North American shale gas, which are expected to begin as early as 2017. The value of the order has not been disclosed, but is thought to be several dozen million dollars. The systems use fuel such as natural gas or oil in engines that generate electric power, which in turn drives motors to turn the propellers. This allows more precise control of the speed of rotation and improves fuel economy from conventional gas turbine propulsion systems by 20%. This is said to be GEs first order for maritime equipment from a Japanese shipyard, though it has supplied 65 systems to shipyards in such locations as Europe and South Korea over the last 10 years. In the future, the American engineering giant aims to sell other types of systems, such as those for shipboard automated control and maritime positioning. (Nikkei)
