January, 1975...my diary tells me I taught my FIRST DAY as a certified hired and for real teacher in a Eudora, Arkansas (Delta land...poorest town in the poorest county in a very poor state about eight miles from Greenville, Mississippi...). I had idealism and fire in my heart. Over at the teachers trailer I posted a handwritten note reminding every faculty member I would be in the Library after school to share WHAT WORKS with anyone who might be interested in teaching better than average... The library lady laughed at me, You think anybody coming, Mr Gunter? well yes I did... But no one did... Except me...so I just did it my own way and ignored mean hearts and negative minds...the principal tried to fire me...a higher up leader found himself on the front page for misuse of school funds...so it goes... I never gave up on any student even when they never gave me chance... When i worked in the pharmacy I never gave up on customer patients even when the young man who tried to kill himself botched it and wound up with no face...the pharmacist made jokes when he left for being such a screw up...he couldnt even get suicide right...That is pretty damned mean isnt it. I quit working for them too... This morning I remind myself LOVE is the best LIFE... Thank you teachers in my life who never gave up on me...
