January 1981 house fire on Main Street in Pennsburg. Take a look at what is the beginning of a transition in the United States fire services. Firemen used to wear long coats, hip boots, and a helmet. The use of SCBA (air packs) was relatively new for many fire companies. With steel cylinders and rudimentary harnesses the SCBA was uncomfortable and cumbersome. Todays generation of firefighters now wear full turnout gear with nomex hood and gloves to be 100% protected......and SCBA are half the weight of the generation pictured here.
