January 19th, 2006, we lost another long-time Detroit favorite. Wilson Pickett was born in Alabama, then moved to Detroit at the age of 14. With that gritty, gruff, high-powered, gospel-influenced voice .. Pickett gave us classics. Joining the Falcons in 1959, which included Eddie Floyd and Mustang Sally writer Sir Mack Rice .. he moved to Atlantic Records. Getting arrangements from Jerry Wexler, he also collaborated with Steve Cropper, then later Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. In 2004, Pickett slowed down his activities due to various illnesses .. and died of a heart attack in Virginia at the age of 64. Oddly enough, Pickett only scored two million sellers, with Dont Let the Green Grass Fool You and Dont Knock My Love. With that unmistakable voice .. we remember Wilson Pickett .. and if theres a favorite of yours, feel free to add it on.
