The OEAS has expressed urgent concern regarding the arrest of Biafran Zionist Movement leader, Benjamin Onwuka and ten others on charges of treason in a diplomatic note to the Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency (Prof.) Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye. The OEAS is requesting the immediate release of Onwuka and the arrested BZM members. Biafra was a charter member of the OEAS which was founded in Washington DC in 2011. Biafra declared independence on 30 May 1967 and was terminated on 12 January 1970 through military conquest by Nigeria. Biafra was diplomatically recognized by five diverse nations: Tanzania, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Haiti. In 2011 a Biafran Government in Exile was established in Washington DC. The Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM) is a domestic political organization seeking the immediate and complete independence of Biafra and its goals are supported by the OEAS.
