Trade Reports Trends in the China food market, such as rising consumer power, improving on healthy lifestyles, and concern and awareness about the safety of standard foods in China, particularly dairy, will contribute substantially to increased demand for fortified/functional foods (FF). Fortified/functional baby food (milk formula) and FF dairy are the leaders in the FF sector in China, and are expected to continue experiencing dynamic growth. Research has also shown that the number of consumers seeking the benefits of fortified ingredients and milk formula is increasing. In 2012, the two largest subcategories within FF packaged food were baby food (milk formula), and dairy; representing 49% and 45% of total sales, respectively. However, the most significant FF packaged food subcategory, in terms of growth, was energy and nutrition bars, representing just 0.15% of total sales in 2012, but recording a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 72.3% from 2007-2012. Many of the top grocery retailers in China are shifting their geographic focus, as the markets in first-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai are becoming saturated, and are looking at establishing a presence over their competitors in second- and third-tier cities. Understanding the shopper remains crucial to success – knowledge of regional variations, catering to the country’s growing middle class, and placing high priority on food safety are three important considerations. The outlook for FF packaged food sales in China remains favourable, with a CAGR of 17.5% expected from 2012 to 2017. However, slimming meal replacements is forecast to record the best performance in terms of sales growth, with a CAGR of 21.6% over the same period, emphasizing that consumer demand for FF products that support a healthy lifestyle while offering convenience, will remain strong into the future. Energy/nutrition bars represented just 0.15% of total sales in 2012, but recording a CAG R of 72.3% from 2007-2012 1 Trade Reports are available to Canada Brand members only. However, a series of factors including an increasing emphasis on convenient, quick-to-prepare, ready-to-eat valuepriced foods, have opened some opportunities for exporters in this market. Japanese consumers are also very interested in new and innovative products, specifically those that are directed at health, as 24% of the population is now over 65 years of age, the oldest of any country within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Meal replacements, ready meals, and pastas are growing more popular, as a result of the aging population and the fast-paced lifestyle of young Japanese consumers. Young professionals living away from home, and the aging population have become two unique demographics of consumers demonstrating significant demand for processed foods that are easy-to-prepare, with value-added qualities. As a result of natural disasters and consumers reducing their spending due to the economic downturn, packaged food sales have shown steady decline in value sales over the last five years. The forecasted outlook was a continued decline in 2014 and then an upturn from 2015 to 2018. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the forecasted period of 2014 to 2018 is expected to be 0.4%, which is a change from the -0.5% from 2009 to 2013. The top three sub categories predicted to see the most growth over the forecasted period are meal replacements (5.8%), frozen processed food (2.4%) and pasta (2.2%). These three sub categories are small in relation to overall value sales, but show the most potential for growth over the 2014 to 2018 forecasted period because they are quick and easy to prepare.
