January 21, 2014 John 1:29, 30 The next day he [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ The Lamb of God In Latin, the term Lamb of God is translated Agnus Dei. There is a great Third Day song with this same title and part of the lyrics say, Holy, You are holy. King of kings, Lord of lords. You are holy, Holy, you are holy. King of kings, Lord of lords I worship you . I imagine when John the Baptist realized who Jesus was something close to these lyrics came over him, and he felt compelled to worship Jesus. John declares in this passage, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Never before had such a thing been said about another person, and yet John boldly declares here to the world about Jesus that he is the last lamb that will ever be needed. Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice for the entire world, the then known world, but also the world that would continue through the course of history. Jesus is still the Lamb of God who takes sin away, who forgives and restores, and who heals those whose lives have been ruined and disgraced by the effects of sin. None of us should ever be any less bold than John in our daily lives, but should be willing to declare Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away sin and replaces it with forgiveness and joy. Question for Growth Can you declare in your life that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes sin away? Prayer Jesus, Lamb of God, thank you for being the final sacrifice for my sin. May I now live for you as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
