January 21, 2015 Members of the SIU Carbondale Community, You are receiving this message as part of Southern Illinois Universitys commitment to providing campus-area crime information in compliance with the federal Clery Act, formally known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The Carbondale Police Department is investigating four robberies that have occurred in the same off-campus geographical area in Carbondale over the last three weeks, beginning on Jan. 7. Two of the robberies occurred during the late evening and early morning hours and two occurred between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. These robberies have been isolated between South University Avenue and South Beveridge Street and West Cherry Street and West College Street. The most recent robbery was on Jan. 21, 2015, at approximately 11:15 a.m. in the area of S. Beveridge. During three of the robberies, the suspect displayed a handgun. The suspect is described as a black male, 18 -24 years of age, 5’8” tall, with a thin build, weighing 150 to 160 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Please remember to be aware of your surroundings, travel in groups, use Night Safety Transit when available or other public transportation, and report suspicious activity to the police.
